The role of geometric accuracy in screw press baskets

In screw presses used for solid-liquid separation — including sludge, organic waste (OFMSW), livestock slurry treatment and biogas production — separator performance is strictly linked to the quality of the screw press screen basket.

The basket’s quality is determined not only by materials (profile wires and support bars) and slot openings but also by the strict control of geometrical tolerances.

Key parameters of geometric accuracy in screw press baskets

  1. Average diameter: Essential to ensure proper clearance between screw and basket
  2. Cylindricity: Ensures diameter consistency along the basket axis, allowing uniform clearance between screw and basket filtering surface over the entire length
  3. Face perpendicularity and parallelism: Critical for proper positioning of the basket in the screw press
  4. Bars position, dimensions, straightness and parallelism: Required to guarantee precise installation and stable operating clearance.

Correct matching between screw and basket — regardless of whether it is made with a wedge wire screen basket or perforated plates — is a fundamental condition for reliable screw press operation.
As far as the basket is concerned, this depends on tight tolerances applied to all the above parameters.

Dimensional inspection and control tools

Producing baskets that fully meet geometric specifications requires a structured manufacturing process supported by rigorous dimensional controls in all phases, both during manufacturing and on the finished product.

To verify geometric compliance, Costacurta has developed dedicated procedures and employs a range of inspection tools, including:

  • three-point micrometers,
  • Go/No-Go gauges,
  • laser-based measuring systems
  • anthropomorphic measuring arm for high-precision contact measurements.
